What Temperature Should You Curl Your Hair At? A Guide by Hair Type

Why temperature matters more than technique

Too little heat and the curl drops within the hour. Too much and you're trading curls for breakage. The sweet spot depends almost entirely on your hair type — not on the tool's maximum setting.

Fine or color-treated hair: 300–340°F

Fine hair has a thinner cuticle, so it heats up fast and damages fast. Stay in the 300–340°F range and use a slightly longer timer instead of more heat. The same goes for bleached or color-treated hair, which is more porous and fragile.

Normal or medium hair: 340–360°F

This is the easy middle. Most people with medium-texture hair get all-day curls at 340–360°F with a 12–14 second timer.

Thick or coarse hair: 360–390°F

Dense strands need more heat to reshape. Work in smaller sections at 360–390°F rather than blasting large sections at max — smaller sections curl faster and more evenly.

The one rule everyone should follow

Always start one setting lower than you think you need. If the curl doesn't hold, step up. A curler with multiple precise settings — like the 6 on the CurLee Beauty curler — makes this easy; a one-temperature tool makes it impossible.
